The South African junior team championships for 2017/18 were held at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Boksburg from 3rd to 8th January 2018. Detailed results for all the sections can be found on chess-results.com, for example, here is a link to the results of the under 20 A section. There were more than 250 teams with about 2 500 players taking part in the team event, which was divided into multiple sections in each age group, from under 8 up to under 20. For purposes of this report, I will note the sections and summarise the results of team KZN:
Firstly, our Ilembe district sent 4 teams. They finished 7th in the u10C section, 3rd in the u12C, 5th in the u14C and 4th in the u18C section.
Our King Cetshwayo district sent 6 teams. They won a magnificent 2 golds and a silver! Their golds came in the u10C section and u12D section, with silver in the u16C section. Their other teams were 7th in the u12D, 4th in the u14C and 6th in the u14E section.
The Ethekwini district sent the most teams, which were all competing in the A sections of each age group. They were 2nd in the u8A, 3rd in the u10A, 3rd in the u12A, 5th in the u14A, 3rd in the u16A, 4th in the u18A and 5th in the u20A section. Considering that the results were better in the younger age groups, this bodes well for the future. Perhaps the most disappointing result was the u16A, which won a gold medal last year, and could have won gold again, had all the top players been available.
Lastly, I must mention that Joseph Mwale won the very strong blitz event with a perfect score of 7/7, showcasing once again his talent at blitz.
Photos and videos from the event are available on Facebook.

9th JZ Open
The annual Presidential chess tournament was held at the Sibusisiwe Hall in Mandeni on 22nd December 2017. This was the 9th such event. The hall comfortably accommodated almost 300 players, who pitched up from all over KZN. The A section was open to all players, many of whom entered on the day, which delayed the start of play. Another reason for the delayed start was that we could not access the hall until it had been cleared by the sniffer dogs. The B section was for teams of 10 juniors (5 boys and 5 girls) with the hosts Mandeni being the top seeds. Play started in both sections at about 11 am. We could have started play earlier in the B section, but the conditions were far too noisy, with the DJ blasting non-stop music at full volume.
Each round took about an hour to complete. Most of the games in the A section finished quite quickly, as there were lots of easy points on offer for the top players. Things were different in the B section, where the top teams started meeting each other from the second round. Pairings for round 5 in the A section were ready when we heard the presidential chopper fly over the hall, so this round went ahead as usual. The last few games from round 4 in the B section were still being finished as this happened, so we stopped play in this section, pending the imminent arrival of President Zuma.
Mandeni were clear winners in the team event, with Ethekwini in 2nd place, and Ugu surprised us with 3rd place. I have published all the details on chess-results.com. The open section was still undecided after 5 rounds, as there were 6 players tied with 5 wins each, namely Cyril Danisa, Wanda Khanyile, Johannes Mabusela, Bheki Mgobhozi, Tshediso Mpya and Musa Nyathi.
Whilst the president visited the junior players from the team event and played a few games against them, a round robin blitz play-off was held for the A section. This was won convincingly by the new South African champion, IM Johannes Mabusela, with 4 wins and a draw, so he took home yet another trophy!

KZN District championship
It was perhaps no surprise that Ethekwini won the inaugural KZN District championships, held over the weekend of 24th to 26th June 2016. Much more interesting was the battle for the silver medals, which was won by the Uthungulu district after narrow wins over their chief rivals from Amajuba, who took the bronze medals, and the Ilembe district, which finished in 4th place.
The full results have been published on the chess-results.com website, here is a link to the team results summary.
Here is a game with a very nice finish, sent to me by coach Spha from Ilembe:

iLembe's golden girls
As previously reported, the under 15 girls team from Khayalemfundo School in Mandeni were crowned as Top Schools chess champions in Pretoria in December 2015.
Their story has now been published in the Stanger Weekly newspaper of 10th February 2016: "On Friday (5th February 2016), officials of the iLembe Department of Education, KwaZulu-Natal Chess Association and the Department of Sport and Recreation paid an unannounced visit to the school to congratulate the pupils on their outstanding achievement."
President of KwaZulu-Natal Chess Association, Sandile Xulu, heaped praise upon the school chess coach, Siyabonga Gumede, and the girls on their outstanding feat. He also presented each of the seven girls with a chess set and a chess clock. Click on this link for the full article on news24.

SA Junior Team champs
The annual SA Junior team championships took place in Cape Town at the UCT Sports Hall from 4th to 7th January 2016. KZN was well represented by teams from the Ethekwini, Ilembe and Uthungulu districts. The first 2 days were extremely uncomfortable in the playing hall, thanks to a heat wave, and thousands of litres of water were consumed by the players. Western Province (the hosts) took most of the gold medals in the A division after 7 rounds of gruelling competition, winning gold in 5 of the 7 age categories. The exceptions were the under 8 category, won by Tshwane, and the under 14 category, won by Ethekwini. Here is a link to the under 14 team results; the same page also lets you select other age group results that you may be interested in. The successful Ethekwini under 14 team was anchored by FIDE Masters Naseem Essa (left) and Cailin Chetty (right) on the top boards:
The writer was present as an arbiter for the team event. We all wore a high visibility red arbiters shirt and were kept very busy, mostly with illegal moves! I handled 63 illegal moves during the 7 rounds, as well as a variety of other incidents. In the photo, I'm listening to the Buffalo City team manager:

December events
My apologies for not posting any chess news in December. I was taking a break for medical reasons and will now try and catch up with recent events. In the week ending 15th December 2015, KZN sent four teams to the SA Top Schools championships held in Pretoria. Our under 15 girls team from Khayalemfundo Primary school in the Ilembe district won a gold medal:
In the same week, the SALGA games for KZN were being held in KwaDukuza (Stanger). Chess formed part of the SALGA games for the first time. Ethekwini were declared the best performing district after all the completed under 14 and under 20 results were combined (only 7 rounds of the round-robin sections were played). Unfortunately, I have not received any photos or the detailed results from this event.
This was followed on 20th December by the 7th JZ Chess Open, which took place in President Zuma's home town of Nkandla. The winners of the junior Team event (after 5 rounds) were Amajuba district. The winner of the Open section was Wanda Khanyile, on tie-break ahead of Khetha Mngadi and David Khondowe:
Last but not least, the African Youth chess championships took place in Lusaka, Zambia, from 6th to 12th December. Durban's Divesh Sookdeo was there as the SA team manager and his report can be found in article 448 on the Chess SA website. Five players from KZN were selected to play for South Africa, namely Karmishta Moodley, Naseem Essa, Keyana Padayachee, Kenyon Padayachee and Shivar Gopaulsingh. Congratulations go to Naseem Essa for his gold medal in the open under 12 division, which brings with it the title of FIDE Master. (At the time of writing, this event had not been rated by FIDE and so his title has not yet been updated). Also successful were Karmishta Moodley (silver medal, girls under 12) and Keyana Padayachee (silver medal, girls under 16).
In the same week, the SALGA games for KZN were being held in KwaDukuza (Stanger). Chess formed part of the SALGA games for the first time. Zuma Foundation in Ilembe
JACOB G ZUMA FOUNDATION – CHESS IN SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP 2015
On
Saturday 27 June 2015, the Foundation will be hosting
its very first annual schools chess tournament, the
‘JACOB G ZUMA FOUNDATION - CHESS IN SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP 2015’.
The tournament takes place at Umhlali Preparatory School in the area
of KwaDukuza (Stanger) from 09h00-16h30.
The
Jacob G Zuma Foundation, under the stewardship of its Patron - the
President of the Republic of South Africa, continues to make a
difference where it matters most - in the field of education and
training of our future leaders from the ranks of underprivileged
children. Encouraged by the JZ CHESS OPEN success which takes place
in December that dates back to 2009, the Foundation has formalized
the program called ‘CHESS
IN SCHOOLS’
launched in May 2014 and endorsed by the KZN Department of Education.
The program is piloted in 20 schools in the district of Ilembe.
Since
the program began we have trained more than 100 educators. The
Foundation has not only trained educators but it has also dedicated a
full-time chess coach who visits the schools and trains pupils as
well. The President, in his capacity as patron, has been involved in
promoting the game of chess encouraging government and private sector
to invest in chess as an intervention to education. “The benefits
of chess are well documented around the world, we are proud to be at
the forefront of introducing and popularizing chess not only as a
sport code but as the tool to unblock the potential of the young
intellectuals and shaping the future of South Africa” said Mr
Sandile Xulu who is the Foundation’s chess coach.
200
pupils from previously disadvantaged communities will have the
opportunity to represent their schools in the championship
tournament; each school will be represented by 10 players, 5 girls
and 5 boys, while more than 50 educators do battle for a gold medal of
the best chess educator. The event is expected to host about 300
players. High ranking officials from Provincial government, MEC of
Education and HOD as well as district officials are expected to
attend the event.

Dolphin Coast April Swiss
Coach Spa reports from Ilembe: Dolphin Coast Chess Club was proud to host a tournament on 18th April 2015 that attracted higher rated players from Durban to participate in our tournament. We are promoting rated tournaments in our area. In the past we hardly had rated tournaments. The forming of the Dolphin Chess Club will allow many local kids an opportunity to play rated tournaments with a chance to gain rating points and hopefully improve the standard of play.
We had 51 participants competing for the first prize of R1 000. The tournament was played over 5 rounds in a 60/60 format. In the adult section Joseph Mwale tied for first with Lulama Qobo on 5/5, followed by Cyril Danisa and Phiwe Phakathi who tied for 3rd place.
The High school section was won by Richard Paterson, 2nd place Demmer Brown, 3rd place Luthuli Lungelo. In the Primary School section 1st place went to Kiaren Naidoo, 2nd place Tashiv Govender, 3rd place Jamie Evetts.
Here are the final results after round 5, for all the sections.

Dolphin Coast - new club
Press Release.
The Dolphin Coast Chess Club has been launched and one of our local chess coaches, Siphamandla Nkosi, has qualified as the first chess arbiter in the Ilembe district.
Nkosi,
known to his players as Coach Spa, has been involved in chess for 12
years and has been coaching the Umhlali Preparatory chess players and
all Senior Primary pupils for the past 10
years. His recent qualification ensures that our local tournaments
can qualify as rated tournaments. This is a huge advantage for our
local players as it offers them the opportunity to play skilled
players and challenges them to improve the level of their game.
The
Dolphin Coast Chess Club is a new initiative to encourage chess
players (beginners to masters) to participate competitively in the
Ilembe district. The Dolphin Coast Chess Club will be run as a club
to ensure minimum expenses to the members. An annual membership fee
will ensure that the players receive three rated tournaments per year
and that the club will be able to accumulate chess equipment. Two Swiss format tournaments are also planned for the year.
Our
vision is to create a respected club of high calibre chess players
that are passionate for the game and to encourage and develop new
players of all ages.
The
Chess Club will meet at Umhlali Preparatory School on Wednesday
evenings during the school term. For more information, please email Kerry or phone her on 0711436466.

Giant chess sets for KZN schools
Sandile Xulu reports:
On
Tuesday 2nd September 2014 the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Ms
Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni expressed a wish that, in each and every new school to
be built in the Province of KwaZulu Natal, there will be a garden
chess set.
Speaking to students, educators and business persons at Stanger South High School in Ilembe District, the MEC announced that she wants chess to be rolled out to all schools in KZN. She was talking in the school assembly before walking into a classroom where grade 10 students had their first chess lesson. It was a first-hand experience of ‘classroom chess’ for the MEC as well. As part of her visit to the school, the MEC donated scientific calculators to further enhance mathematics and motivate students to take science subjects.President Jacob Zuma has repeatedly made a call in support of chess being introduced to all schools in South Africa. Through his own initiative, the Jacob G. Zuma Foundation, President Zuma has launched a program called ‘Chess-in-Schools’ which will see many schools benefit from having a school chess program.
KZN Chess Association President Sandile Xulu together with Ilembe Chess Association chairperson Welcome Gwamanda conducted the chess lessons. Problem was, students were so interested in chess that they did not want the session to end!
The MEC donated some chess sets to help the school start their own chess program. Business people also pledged-in their support to make sure that chess becomes a success story in Stanger South High School.

ILembe Youth Trials, 16th-17th August 2014
This weekend saw the last of this year's youth trials, held over 2 days at Umhlali Preparatory School in the ILembe district. Close to a hundred players took part and enjoyed 6 rounds of rated chess. The surprising winner of the under 20 section (and best under 16 player) was Yasheel Maharaj, who scored 5 out of 6. He drew with top seed Miguel Murugan in the last round, and defeated number 2 seed Gregory Hall with a very nice piece sacrifice in round 3 - unfortunately his game score was not legible so I cannot show you this game. Best under 18 player was Llewellyn Iyer and best under 20 player was Miguel Murugan. Here are some photos I took of the under 20 section:
