SA Open 2017 brochure

The SA Open will be held in Durban this year, from the 14th to the 22nd of July 2017. The venue will be Glenwood High School. There will be three main sections, with standard time controls, as well as rapid and blitz events available for interested players. Section A is for players rated over 1500, it will be FIDE rated and 11 rounds will be played (entry fee R500). Section B is for players rated below 1500, also 11 rounds (entry fee R400). Section C will be a weekend event, with 6 rounds (entry fee R200).

For more information, please see the online brochure, and here is a link to the online entry form.

The last time the SA Open was played in Durban was in 1996, so I trust that all local players will take this opportunity to play. I played in five SA Open tournaments - in 1978, 1984, 1993, 1995 and 1996 - and have written an article about the history of the SA open in Durban for the occasion of its return to Durban.

Kenny Solomon masterclass

Just over a year ago Kenny Solomon became South Africa's first grandmaster, by winning the African individual chess championship held in Windhoek. Kenny currently lives in Venice and plays in a lot of open tournaments in Europe. He is a regular at the Gibraltar Masters open and was this year invited to do a video presentation on two of his best games, followed by answering questions about chess in South Africa. The video, titled Masterclass GM Kenny Solomon, is about 70 minutes long, and gives a fascinating look at his chess philosophy and his love for the game. I highly recommend this video!

Durban Chess Club birthday

The Durban Chess Club is celebrating its 122nd birthday this week! The club was founded in August 1893 and is one of the oldest chess clubs in South Africa. I believe that the Cape Town chess club was founded earlier and is still active, but many other clubs such as those in Johannesburg and in Pietermaritzburg appear to have fallen into the abyss.

After many years at mysite.co.za, the Durban Chess Club website has recently relocated to its own domain durbanchessclub.co.za which is much easier to remember! All of the old content is still available on the new website. The move means that the previous 20Mb space restriction falls away, so I will be able to publish more images on the new club website.

Contact Desmond Rooplal (chairman) or  Keith Rust (captain of play) for more information.

Dolphin Coast - new club

Press Release.
The Dolphin Coast Chess Club has been launched and one of our local chess coaches, Siphamandla Nkosi, has qualified as the first chess arbiter in the Ilembe district.
Nkosi, known to his players as Coach Spa, has been involved in chess for 12 years and has been coaching the Umhlali Preparatory chess players and all Senior Primary pupils for the past 10 years. His recent qualification ensures that our local tournaments can qualify as rated tournaments. This is a huge advantage for our local players as it offers them the opportunity to play skilled players and challenges them to improve the level of their game.
The Dolphin Coast Chess Club is a new initiative to encourage chess players (beginners to masters) to participate competitively in the Ilembe district. The Dolphin Coast Chess Club will be run as a club to ensure minimum expenses to the members. An annual membership fee will ensure that the players receive three rated tournaments per year and that the club will be able to accumulate chess equipment. Two Swiss format tournaments are also planned for the year.
Our vision is to create a respected club of high calibre chess players that are passionate for the game and to encourage and develop new players of all ages.
The Chess Club will meet at Umhlali Preparatory School on Wednesday evenings during the school term. For more information, please email Kerry or phone her on 0711436466.

Chess SA seeks managers and coaches

We have just received the following documents from Marcelle Agulhas, the General Secretary of Chess South Africa. The closing date for all applications is Sunday 15th March.

1.  2015 Team Managers Application Form for International Tournaments.
2.  2015 Team Coaches Application Form for International Tournaments.

The documents contain a list of ten international events in 2015 where South African chess players can be expected to participate. This is an astonishing number of events when you consider that Chess SA is currently in arrears with FIDE. Some amounts have allegedly been outstanding since 2011.

In early December 2014, FIDE published a notice that Federations more than 6 months in arrears would have services suspended and players from those Federations would not be able to take part in any FIDE rated events. FIDE then published the names of the Federations affected on its website:

Federations in Arrears

In accordance with decisions of Presidential Board in Sochi, FIDE publishes the list of Federation in Arrears.

Until the arrears have been paid off, players from these Federations cannot participate in any FIDE events that are under the aegis of
a) the World Championship & Olympiad Commission or Events Commission,
b) Continental competitions that provide qualifiers to any of the aforesaid competitions.

The list will be regularly updated.

(South Africa was one of the countries listed.)
